The Best Cheap Stain Removers for Clothes

We picked these from their labels, the makers’ directions, dated prices and thousands of shopper ratings. We did not test them, and Denise never pretends she did.

We may earn a small fee from these links. It never changes the picks or your price.

Working a stain remover gel into a gray shirt

A good stain remover does not have to cost much, but it does have to match the stain, because a grease spot and a grass stain need different help. Every label on this page has been read for you, so you can pick the one made for the mess you actually have.

Pick 1: Best for most homes

Shout Active Enzyme Laundry Stain Remover Spray, 22 fl oz

This is the one to grab for everyday food spots. It is cheap and easy to find, and the label gives you a lot of room: you can treat a stain now and wash it up to a week later.

Good for
Everyday food, dirt and grass spots on colorfast washable clothes.
Skip it if
The stain is on silk or wool, which the label rules out. The label also warns that rust, bleach damage, dried paint, ink and dyes may never come out.
Price
$3.48 (about 16 cents per fluid ounce)

Pick 2: Lowest price per ounce for a spray

Spray ’n Wash Pre-Treatment Laundry Stain Remover, 22 oz

This is the spray for a busy laundry day when price matters most.

Good for
Quick spray-and-wash jobs on a busy laundry day.
Skip it if
You are treating washable silk, khaki or bright fluorescent clothes, which the label leaves out, or a chocolate stain, which the label says not to rub. Test a hidden spot first, as the label asks.
Price
$2.98 (about 14 cents per fluid ounce)

Pick 3: Best for tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and greasy food

Zout Laundry Stain Remover Spray, Triple Enzyme, 22 fl oz

Reach for this one when the stain is saucy or greasy.

Good for
Kids’ shirts after spaghetti night, and saucy, greasy food spots.
Skip it if
The stain is on silk, which the label rules out, or you want the cheapest spray, since it costs about twice as much per ounce as Spray ’n Wash.
Price
$5.98 (about 27 cents per fluid ounce)

Pick 4: Best if you cannot wash right away

OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, 16 fl oz

This is the pick for when the laundry has to wait.

Good for
Shake, soak the spot and toss it in the hamper until wash day.
Skip it if
The fabric is not machine washable, since the label is written for machine-washable fabrics. Also check the price, because the listing showed a higher “was” price of $16.49 on the same page, so $4.46 may be a sale.
Price
$4.46 (about 28 cents per fluid ounce)

Pick 5: Best for grease and dirty collars

Fels-Naptha Laundry Bar, 5 oz

This is the cheapest thing on this page to buy, and the label names grease, oil, sweat and ring around the collar.

Good for
Grease spots on cotton shirts and the dark line on a shirt collar.
Skip it if
You want something you can spray, or you have sensitive skin, since the label warns it irritates eyes and skin.
Price
$1.87 (about 37 cents per ounce by weight, but you only rub on a little at a time)

Pick 6: Best for a long soak

OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder, 1.77 lb

For dingy whites or a stain that needs time, a soak does what a quick spray cannot. Mix it in water by the scoop line and soak for one to six hours, with six hours working best, as the label says.

Good for
Soaking a load of yellowed whites, sweaty shirts or a stained tablecloth.
Skip it if
You do not want to wear gloves. The label warns it can hurt your eyes and says to wear gloves, and it says never to store the mixed water in a closed container.
Price
$6.12 (about 22 cents per ounce by weight). The 5 lb tub was $11.93, about 15 cents per ounce, if you soak often.

Pick 7: Lowest price per ounce on the page

Great Value Multipurpose Oxi-Based Cleaner Powder, 5 lb

This is the pick if you want the lowest cost per ounce. Walmart’s store brand is an oxygen-based powder, and by the ounce it was the cheapest product we priced. The listing says it is for clothing, carpets and upholstery, and it holds a 4.8 star rating from 1,596 shoppers.

Good for
Adding to the wash: the listing says three quarters of a scoop per load in an HE washer.
Skip it if
You want clear soaking directions, because the listing we read gave only the per-load amount. We have not compared it with OxiClean ourselves, so we cannot promise the same results. A 3 lb tub was $5.77 if 5 lb is too much.
Price
$9.14 (about 11 cents per ounce by weight)

Prices and ratings are from Walmart.com on November 6, 2026, and they change by store and by week. Sprays are priced per fluid ounce and powders and bars per ounce of weight, so compare sprays with sprays. Walmart shows star ratings and how many people gave them; we did not count written reviews.

How we picked

We did not test these stain removers. Here is what we did instead, so you can judge the list for yourself.

  1. We read every label. We noted which stains each label names, which fabrics it rules out, how long it should sit and every warning on the bottle.
  2. We checked the maker’s own directions where the maker has a product page.
  3. We priced each one on Walmart.com on one day, November 6, 2026, and worked out the price per ounce.
  4. We looked at star ratings with their counts. Every pick has at least 500 ratings, and most have thousands. Ratings tell you how shoppers felt, not how a lab measured it, so they come last.
  5. We left out bold promises. If a label claim was big and vague, we did not repeat it.

We will check prices and labels again before this page is updated, and the date at the top always tells you when.

Be safe

  • Never mix stain removers with each other or with other cleaners. The Shout label says not to mix it with other household products, and the OxiClean powder label names ammonia and chlorine bleach. See the never-mix chart.
  • Test a hidden spot first, like an inside seam, as the Spray ’n Wash and OxiClean labels ask.
  • Not on silk or wool. Shout, Zout and Spray ’n Wash all rule out silk on their labels, and Shout rules out wool too.
  • Take the shirt off first. The Shout and Zout labels say never to treat clothes while someone is wearing them.
  • Eyes and skin. Spray ’n Wash, Zout and Fels-Naptha warn they irritate eyes and skin, and OxiClean powder warns it can injure eyes. Wear gloves for powders, keep every bottle away from kids and pets, and follow the label if any gets in your eyes. Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222. It is free and confidential, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Check before the dryer. If the stain is still there after washing, treat it again instead of drying it.

Tips that use these

Why it works

Here is why the label matters so much. Most of these sprays use enzymes, which are made to break down one kind of stain each, like the protein in grass or the fat in grease.

So a spray made for food may do very little on rust, and the Shout label says as much. Oxygen powders work differently. They need water and time, which is why they shine in a long soak.

This page reads the fine print for you, and shows you which bottle is made for your stain and which one would be money down the drain.

A word from Denise

So pick the one that names your mess, and follow the wait time on the back. Then check the spot before it goes in the dryer.

Questions people ask

What is the best cheap stain remover for clothes?

For most homes, a $3 to $4 enzyme spray like Shout Active Enzyme covers everyday food and dirt stains. For grease and collars, a $1.87 Fels-Naptha bar is the cheapest pick, and for dingy whites, an oxygen powder soak works best.

Do I have to wash right away after I spray?

Not always. The Shout label says you can treat now and wash within a week, and the OxiClean Max Force label allows up to a week too. Spray ’n Wash is different: wait five minutes at most and do not let it dry.

Can I use stain remover on silk or wool?

Not these. Shout, Zout and Spray ’n Wash rule out silk on their labels, and Shout rules out wool. Follow the care label on the garment instead.

Is the store brand oxygen powder as good as OxiClean?

It costs less per ounce, and both are oxygen-based powders. We have not compared them ourselves, so we cannot promise the same results, and the store brand listing gave fewer directions.

Why is my stain still there after washing?

Some stains will not come out, and the Shout label names rust, bleach damage, dried paint, ink and dyes. For the rest, treat it again before drying, and try a longer soak for old stains.
