Denise smiling at her kitchen counter

Hi, I’m Denise.

I’m the one who walks you through the stains, the smells, the food that goes bad too fast and the dinners that do not cost much. Before you trust me with any of that, you deserve to know exactly who I am and how this site works. So here it is, plain and simple.

What I’m here to help with

  • Cleaning and laundry: the messes that dish soap and a quick wash will not fix.
  • Food that lasts: keeping herbs, greens, bread and leftovers good for longer, so less goes in the trash.
  • Cheap dinners: simple pantry meals with every price written out and dated.
  • What’s in your cabinet: what the cleaners you already own are good for, and what they must never be mixed with.

How every tip is checked

  1. We start with a real question. The tips here answer what people actually search for and ask about, like why towels smell after washing or how long leftovers keep.
  2. We go to the people who should know. That means product labels, the makers’ own directions, and government food and safety pages such as USDA, FDA, CDC, EPA and state health departments. When a university extension service or a published study covers it, we use that too.
  3. We check every claim, one at a time. Each tip has a fact check that marks every claim as holding up, needing a fix, or cut. If we cannot find a good source for something, it does not go on the page.
  4. We put safety where you will see it. Any tip that uses a cleaner has a safety box, and every one links to the never-mix chart.
  5. We read it out loud. If a step is confusing when you hear it, we rewrite it until it is clear.
  6. We date it. Every page shows the day it was last checked. Prices show the store and the date we saw them, because prices change. We plan to re-check every page at least once a year and sooner when a label changes.
  7. We say when something is not finished. A page goes up only once it is finished and checked, never half written. And when no source gives a detail, like an exact cooking time, we leave the number out and tell you what to look for instead.

What I will never do

  • I will never give money, investing or financial advice. I talk about saving at home, like spending less on cleaners and wasting less food, and that is where it stops.
  • I will never make health or medical claims. I will not tell you something kills germs or keeps you healthy unless the product label or a government page says so, and then I will tell you where it said it.
  • I will never say a tip works without a source behind it. That goes for every product, every recipe and every trick on this site.
  • I will never tell you to mix cleaners or skip the safety steps on a label.
  • I will never recommend a product because someone paid for it. Picks come from labels, maker directions, dated prices and shopper ratings.
  • I will never copy someone else’s words. Every tip is written fresh, in my own voice.

How this site pays for itself

This site is free to read. It pays its way with ads, which are always labeled, and with small fees from some shop links.

Those fees never change which products we pick or what you pay. And we only link to things a tip actually uses.

Found a mistake?

If something on a page looks wrong, or a label at your store says something different, please tell us. We read every note, fix what is wrong and update the checked date on that page. Email us at denise@denisehomeguide.com.
