How to Clean Grout Without Ruining It

Every tip here is checked against the sources listed at the bottom.

A gloved hand scrubbing a gray grout line between white floor tiles with a small nylon brush, a bucket of cloudy water beside it

The short answer

What works Dissolve oxygen bleach powder in warm water (the OxiClean Versatile label says scoop line 3 per gallon). Spread it on, let it stand 5 to 30 minutes, scrub with a nylon brush, then rinse and blot dry. Skip vinegar, because a grout maker warns acids can etch or discolor cement grout. Seal it once it is dry.

How long
The label gives the cleaner 5 to 30 minutes to stand on each section before you scrub. A sealer soaks in for up to 5 minutes, and you test it with water 2 hours later.
What it costs
A 3 lb tub of OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover was $9.29 and an up&up Tile and Grout Scrub Brush was $2.69 at Target.com on November 7, 2026.
What you need
Oxygen bleach powder, a bucket, a nylon grout brush, rubber gloves, an old towel, and grout sealer if you want to seal.

Before you start: check three things

  1. Is your grout colored? The CLR label lists colored grout as a surface not to use it on, and the grout maker says acids can lighten it or change its color. Keep acids away from it entirely.
  2. Is the tile natural stone? The same grout maker warns that acids can etch marble, limestone and travertine, so no vinegar or acid cleaner near them. Ask a stone care pro what is safe for your stone.
  3. Is the room aired out? Open a window or turn on the fan before you start.

Step by step

  1. Sweep and wet the grout

Sweep or vacuum the floor so you are not scrubbing grit around. Then wipe the grout lines with warm water so they are damp before the cleaner goes on.

  2. Mix the oxygen bleach

Put on your gloves. Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of the warmest tap water you have. The label says to use the warmest water possible but never to heat or boil it.

Fill the OxiClean scoop to line 3 and stir until it dissolves completely. That is what the tub label says; OxiClean’s website lists line 4, so go by the label on your own tub.

What it looks like: water with no gritty powder left on the bottom of the bucket.

  3. Spread it on and let it stand

Pour or sponge the solution onto one small section of grout, and let it stand 5 to 30 minutes, which is the label’s time for hard surfaces. OxiClean says to work in small areas so the solution does not dry on the surface, so add a splash more if it starts to dry.

  4. Scrub with a nylon brush

Scrub each line with a nylon grout brush in short back-and-forth strokes. Custom Building Products, a grout maker, recommends a white nylon pad with its own tile cleaner to avoid scratching tile, so stay with nylon.

  1. Rinse and blot dry

Rinse the section with clean water and blot it dry with an old towel, which is how OxiClean’s directions finish. Then move to the next section and repeat Steps 3 to 5.

  2. Let it dry, then check it

Wait until the floor is fully dry before you judge it. If some lines are still dark, repeat Steps 3 to 5 on just those lines.

  3. Seal it (cement grout only)

Sealing is optional, but it helps clean grout resist stains. These directions come from the TileLab Grout & Tile Sealer data sheet, so follow the label on whatever sealer you buy.

    1. Start with grout that is clean and completely dry. New grout needs at least 48 hours after it was put in.
    2. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, such as nitrile.
    3. Brush or sponge the sealer onto the grout and let it soak in for up to 5 minutes.
    4. Wipe off any extra right away.
    5. If the first coat soaked right in, put on a second coat the same way.
    6. After 2 hours, drip a few drops of water on the grout. If the water soaks in right away, add another coat.

What it looks like when it is sealed: the water drops sit on top of the grout instead of soaking straight in.

Keep it clean between scrubs

For everyday cleaning, use a pH-neutral cleaner, meaning one that is neither acid nor strongly alkaline. Scott Carothers, writing for the tile trade magazine Stone World, recommends a pH-neutral cleaner for routine cleaning of cement grout.

When it will not work, and what to do instead

Grout does not always come clean on the first pass. Here is what to do then.

  • You heard vinegar is the cheap way to clean grout. It is easy to see why, since vinegar cleans so many things. But Custom Building Products warns that acids may etch, lighten or change the color of cement grout, and Stone World says acid leaves grout more porous, so it gathers dirt faster.
  • The lines are still dark after two rounds. If the grout is cracked or crumbling, a tile pro can tell you whether it needs regrouting.
  • Dark spots in the shower come right back. The EPA says more ventilation and more frequent cleaning usually stop shower mold from coming back. If the mold covers more than about 10 square feet, the EPA points you to its professional cleanup guidance. The habits are in Why shower mold keeps coming back.

Be safe

  • Protect your eyes. The OxiClean label says the powder is harmful to eyes and harmful if swallowed. If it gets in your eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes and get medical attention right away. The TileLab sealer data sheet says it may irritate eyes and skin, so wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Never mix it with other cleaners. The OxiClean label says not to mix it with products containing ammonia, chlorine bleach or other household chemicals. Keep vinegar out of this job completely. See the full never-mix chart.
  • Never seal the bucket. The label says not to mix or store the solution in a closed container, because pressure can build and burst it. Pour out what you do not use.
  • Keep acids off grout and stone. That means vinegar, lemon and acid tile cleaners.
  • Air the room out while you clean and while the sealer dries.

What to buy

We may earn a small fee from these links. It never changes the picks or your price.

  • up&up Tile and Grout Scrub Brush

Narrow nylon bristles that fit the grout line. $2.69 at Target.com on 11/7/2026.

  • OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder, 3 lb

The cleaner for the scrub, and the label lists grout as a use. $9.29 at Target.com on 11/7/2026.

  • TileLab Grout & Tile Sealer, 24 oz

A water-based penetrating sealer for clean, dry cement grout.

Why it works

Cement grout is strongly alkaline, the opposite of an acid. Stone World puts Portland cement grout at a pH of about 11 to 13, way up at the alkaline end of the scale.

That is why acid is the wrong tool. Stone World says acid makes the grout more porous. Think of a kitchen sponge: one with bigger holes soaks up more of whatever spills on it, and grout with bigger pores soaks up more dirt.

Oxygen bleach powder is a cleaner whose label lists grout as a use, so you get the dirt out without reaching for an acid. A penetrating sealer then soaks in and helps the grout resist most common stains, according to the maker’s data sheet.

A word from Denise

You get down on your knees with a toothbrush and a jug of vinegar, and the floor looks wonderful for a while. Then the lines turn darker than before, because the acid opened the grout up. So save the vinegar for something else, and let oxygen bleach and a good seal do the work.

Questions people ask

Does vinegar damage grout?

Over time, it can. A grout maker warns that acids may etch, lighten or change the color of cement grout, and acid makes grout more porous. Use oxygen bleach or a pH-neutral cleaner instead.

What is the best way to clean dirty grout?

Dissolve oxygen bleach powder in warm water and spread it on the grout. Let it stand 5 to 30 minutes, scrub with a nylon brush, then rinse and blot dry. That follows the OxiClean Versatile label’s directions for hard surfaces.

Can I use a wire brush on grout?

Stick with nylon. The grout maker recommends a white nylon pad on tile to avoid scratching it, and a nylon grout brush does the job.

Should I seal grout after cleaning it?

Sealing helps cement grout resist stains. Seal only when it is clean and fully dry, and test it with a few drops of water 2 hours later. If the water soaks right in, add another coat.
