How to Clean an Oven Without Oven Cleaner (Baking Soda, Overnight)

Every tip here is checked against the sources listed at the bottom.

An open oven with the racks out, the back wall and floor covered in a thick white paste, a silicone spatula and a bowl of paste on the open door

The short answer

What works Mix baking soda, a little table salt and water into a thick paste, spread it over the dirty metal and glass inside a cold oven, and leave it overnight with the door shut. In the morning, lift it off with a rubber spatula and warm, wet paper towels, then wipe with water and a little vinegar. This is Arm & Hammer’s own method.

How long
An overnight wait, plus the time it takes to spread the paste at night and wipe it out in the morning.
What it costs
A 3 lb bag of Arm & Hammer baking soda was $3.99 at Target.com on November 6, 2026. A whole oven uses about that much, plus a few tablespoons of salt and a splash of vinegar.
What you need
Baking soda, table salt, water, a bowl, a rubber or silicone spatula, paper towels, white vinegar and rubber gloves.
Never on
The heating elements or the rubber or woven seal around the door (the gasket).

Before you start: what kind of oven is it?

Look at the controls or the manual for the word “self-clean” or “steam clean,” because it changes what is safe.

  • Self-cleaning oven: GE says no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner of any kind should be used in or around any part of a self-clean oven. Read your manual’s cleaning section before you put anything in one, this paste included.
  • Manual clean oven (no cleaning cycle): GE says these need cleaning by hand.
  • Any oven: leave the door gasket alone. That is the soft seal around the edge of the door. Whirlpool says not to clean, rub, damage or move it, because the door needs it to seal.

Step by step

  1. Start with a cold, empty oven

Make sure the oven is off and completely cool. Take out the racks, the broiler pan and anything stored inside, as Arm & Hammer says. The racks get their own clean.

  2. Sweep out the loose crumbs

Wipe out loose crumbs and flakes of burnt food with a dry paper towel, so the paste reaches the stuck layer instead of the crumbs.

  3. Mix the paste

Put on gloves. In a bowl, mix 1 pound of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of table salt and 2 tablespoons of water. Add more water half a tablespoon at a time if you need it. That is Arm & Hammer’s heavy-duty recipe, and the maker says to triple it for the back, sides, ceiling and floor of a whole oven.

What it looks like: a thick, sandy paste, about like cake icing.

  1. Spread it on the dirty metal and glass

Spread the paste over the dirty metal and glass inside the oven: the floor, walls, back and the inside of the door glass. Arm & Hammer says to avoid the heating elements, and stay clear of the door gasket too.

  2. Shut the door and leave it overnight

Close the oven door and leave the paste in the cold oven overnight. Do not turn the oven on.

What it looks like: by morning the paste has hardened, which Arm & Hammer says means it is ready.

  3. Lift it off with a spatula and wet paper towels

In the morning, loosen the hardened paste with a rubber spatula, then wipe it out with warm, wet paper towels, rinsing and wringing them often.

  4. Wipe with water and a little vinegar

Wipe the inside with a towel dampened in 3 parts water to 1 part white vinegar, as Arm & Hammer suggests. Any baking soda you missed will fizz. GE says cleaners should be removed before you use the range again, so keep wiping with clean water until nothing fizzes.

What it looks like when it worked: no fizz when you wipe.

  5. Put the racks back

Once the inside is dry, slide the clean racks back in. You are done.

When it will not work, and what to do instead

A light mess does not need the overnight paste, and some ovens need a different plan.

  • It is only a light mess. Arm & Hammer gives a quicker paste: half a cup of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of water, about as thick as pancake batter. Spread it on the dirty spots, avoiding the heating elements, wait 15 to 20 minutes, then wipe it up with wet paper towels.
  • A greasy film is left on the walls. Arm & Hammer lists ovens and broiler pans among the jobs for Super Washing Soda: half a cup dissolved in a gallon of warm water. Wear gloves, wipe it on, then wipe with clean water. Keep it off any aluminum parts, because the label says not to use it on aluminum, and check your oven manual first.
  • You want to run the self-clean cycle instead. That is fine if your oven has one and the manual allows it. Whirlpool says to take out the racks and pans, wipe out loose soil and keep the kitchen well ventilated. It also says to always move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room.

Be safe

  • Cold oven only. Arm & Hammer’s overnight paste goes in a cold oven. Never spread paste in a warm oven, and never turn the oven on with paste inside.
  • Keep paste off the heating elements and the door gasket. Arm & Hammer says to avoid the heating elements, and Whirlpool says not to clean, rub, damage or move the gasket.
  • No commercial oven cleaner in a self-cleaning oven. GE says none should be used in or around any part of one.
  • Never mix cleaners. Use the baking soda paste on its own and wipe it out before trying anything else. Vinegar is only for the final wipe, and bleach stays out of this job: the Washington State Department of Health says bleach and an acid like vinegar make chlorine gas, and bleach reacts with oven cleaners. See the full never-mix chart.
  • If you use washing soda, wear gloves and keep it out of your eyes. The label says it is an eye irritant and harmful if swallowed, and not for aluminum. If it gets in your eyes, rinse them with water for 15 minutes and call a doctor.
  • Get it all out before you cook. GE says cleaners should be removed before the range is used.
  • Keep the paste and powders away from kids and pets. Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222. It is free and confidential, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Reusable rubber cleaning gloves

For the paste and for washing soda if you use it. up&up Reusable Heavy Duty Latex Gloves were $3.39 at Target.com on 11/7/2026.

Why it works

The brown crust in an oven is grease and food that have baked on, one spill at a time. Baking soda is a mild alkali (the opposite of an acid, like vinegar), and the American Cleaning Institute explains that an alkali is what turns fat into soap. The thick, wet paste keeps it sitting right on the grime for hours, a bit like letting a crusty casserole dish soak overnight.

By morning the paste has hardened, and the spatula and wet towels lift it out along with the loosened dirt. The vinegar at the end has one small job: it fizzes wherever baking soda is left, so you can see what still needs a wipe.

A word from Denise

Nobody wants to open the oven for company and see last Thanksgiving on the floor of it, and a lot of us put the job off because oven cleaner smells so strong. So let the baking soda do the slow work while you sleep, and just keep it off the heating elements and that door seal.

Questions people ask

How do you clean an oven with baking soda?

Spread a thick paste of 1 pound of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons of water inside a cold oven, avoiding the heating elements. Leave it overnight, then wipe it out with a spatula and warm, wet paper towels.

Is it safe to use baking soda in a self-cleaning oven?

We could not find a self-clean oven maker page that covers a baking soda paste. GE’s rule is no commercial oven cleaner or liner in or around a self-clean oven. So read your manual’s cleaning section first, keep any paste off the door gasket, and wipe it all out before you cook.
